Cough, Sneeze, Achoo & Paper

The coffers are starting to replenish.
Kleenex is starting to come in.   Thank you.  Special thank you to the parent who brought in the gigantor box that looked like it was four feet long.  Wow.

And the hand sanitizer shelf is also starting to fill up.     If you haven't picked up a bottle and wanted to do it. We still need it. We know what is coming around the corner......winter.

Also thank you to those parents who are helping to replenish our paper.   Have you brought in a ream lately?  If not the office staff will be thrilled by your donation.   The school goes through ten reams a day.    Thank you!

Ms Henry: A tale of a Chair & Paper Shredder

Update:  Thank you, parent who brought Ms Henry a paper shredder. She is so thrilled and grateful.

We still need a chair!

Ms Henry the LACES College Counselor has two small wishes.   She really needs a chair.   Of course she has a chair, but it is the most uncomfortable chair in the world.   Ms Henry said it does not have to be new or fancy chair, she just would be grateful for a chair that is comfortable.

As you know we don’t have a lot of extra chairs at LACES (we still need chairs for the parent center) so she doesn’t have much opportunity to swap out.

Ms Henry is in her chair a lot talking to colleges and universities on behalf of our students.

Do you have a gently used comfortable office chair you are no longer using?   Or perhaps there are a couple of you who want to go in on a chair?   Email me and I will help coordinate.  Trabot@ca.rr.com

Ms Henry’s other need is a commercial grade paper shredder.  Every time Ms Henry  prints out a student's grades and and goes over it with the student she then must shred it to protect their privacy.   There is a general shredder that serves the whole school but she shreds so much she would benefit by one that is in the College Center.

She needs one that is a little bit more industrial than home shredders but it does not have to be uber fancy .  Something like the Ativa Pro.    There is one on ebay for about $80.    Or maybe Craigslist?

Book Update!

We believe we are good on Bluest Eye.  Thank you, parents!

We have had a lot of headway on the other two titles, seriously great headway--- but we still need one more push.

We need 5 more copies of Julie of the Wolves.  You can find it on AMAZON.

And we need 5 more copies of The Circuit which you can also find on AMAZON.

The English department is forever in your debt and very grateful for all of you who have helped. If there were some of you who still wanted to contributed but haven't had a chance---now is the time.  Your contribution goes a long way.  You can drop it off yourself or if you ship send it to:

Update:
Success!!!  This wish has been completed.
Thanks to all who helped!

Parents,
Do you love science?  Do you want your child to love science?
Or  Is your child in Mr. Mukai's class?    Do you think your child may be in Mr. Mukai's class in the future?

Mr. Mukai has a science wish list on Donor's Choose.
If you can make a monetary donation of any amount it will help.

And if you can make a donation between now and October 21 (Put the word INSPIRE in promo code) your donation will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100).  So you donate $20 and you put Inspire in promo code, he'll get $40 towards his goal.

Culinary Teacher Request

UPDATE:
Ms Phillips received two new yogurt makers.
And A gently used one is on its way to her.
She is excited to set up a lesson on cultures and she has been talking with the science teachers to see how it can line up with their curriculum.
She could still use some plastic storage containers.  If you can pick up some she would be grateful.

Two yogurt makers are on their way to Ms Phillips.

But she could still use a couple more.   Can you check your cupboard?  Can you pick one up?  They are less than $30 on Amazon.

If you don't have one can you ask a friend of your's?  You know the friend who probably bought it about ten years ago, used it twice an forgot about it.

Also she did get some containers (thank you, parent) but Ms Phillips still needs plastic containers with lids.

The Math Department needs white chalk.
Their preferred brand is Prang White Chalk which you can find at this link at Staples.

They have plenty of mulitcolor chalk but White is needed.
If you pick some up at your next trip to Staples drop it off at the office attention Mr. Vriesman.
If you want to buy online have it delivered to school attention: Mr. Vriesman.

Your help is appreciated by our math teachers and our students.

BOOKS WE STILL NEED!!!!

Thanks to our generous parents several of the the book requests were filled last month.

However, we are still short.

We need 15 copies of THE BLUEST EYE by Toni Morrison.   Do you have a copy of it at home?  How about your sister/friend/neighbor who reads everything?  Do they have a copy they would like to donate?    And of course, it can be purchased onAMAZON.

We need 15 copies of JULIE OF THE WOLVES by Jean Craighead George.
Do you have any copies at home?  Again it can be found on AMAZON

And we need 15 copies of THE CIRCUIT by Francisco Jaminez.  AMAZON

If you are passionate about reading, it probably started when you were the same age as the LACES students.   If you want to help inspire and ignite the reading bug in your child and his or her friend, please pick up one or two of these books.    The instructors who teach will do their part which won't be hard because they too are passionate about books.

Also, look around, do you have an old Barnes and Noble card?  Take it out of the dusty drawer and get one of these books.   Or what about Grandma?  Does she want to help your child's school?  Is she a passionate reader?  Ask her to go to Amazon and send a  book to LACES.

If you drop off, take it to the front office--attention Nikki Derdzinske.

If you ship send it:

Office Staff Needs Help

Did you know that student ID's and bus passes are laminated?

The office staff uses business card laminating pouches to protect the student's id's and bus passes.   can you pick up a packet at OFFICE DEPOT or go online and order them.  Please go to Office Depot, the ones at Staples are too small.  They run about $20 for a package.    The size should be 3 3/4 by 2 9/16 inches.

Office Staff Thanks you.

The Parent Center Needs Help

This week the old microwave in the parent center went on to life support.   And the plug will be pulled soon.   Michelle providing her parents barely used microwave in two weeks.  Thanks!

Do you have a gently used microwave that you could donate to the parent center?
Or maybe you want to pick up one (under $70)  at Target?
Parent volunteers would be grateful as this is where they heat up their lunch.

The Parent Center is very low on Avery Labels5160/8160 (or similar) .   Do you have a box lying around your house from the old days when you mailed Christmas cards before now when you send cyber ones?  Do you have a box from some old job?   Or could you pick up a box at Staples.

Finally can you send in some cups (non styro) for hot drinks?  Do you have a stack lying around from some home party?   It would be so appreciated by everyone if you could send it to the Parent Center.

The Parent Center Volunteers thank you.

Hand Sanitizer is Running Low!

Our little cupboard with antibacterial hand sanitizers is low, low, low.  Cold and Flu season is minutes away and this supply is not enough.   When you are out and about doing errands can you pick up a few bottles of Purell or similiar and drop off at the office?
Your child's teacher(s) need it.

If we all pick up some bottles we can fill the coffers back up very soon.

Achoo! Cough! Hack! Achoo! Sniff!

Have you noticed the Santa Ana's are blowing?   Yep the dry winds are here and the allergies are up.    Our kids are coughing and sneezy and looking for tissues.

This is what is left of our tissues.   The cupboard is getting low.   Before the staff orders more from the district which impacts our budget.   Would you consider picking up some boxes of kleenex (or the like) and dropping them off at the office?     The noses are running!!

K-CUPS

Last month two parents generously donated single cup coffee makers to the parent center.  Now when a parent works at school and wants a cup of coffee they can make one cup instead of a whole carafe.  Hurray.    But we could really use some K-Cups  (the K stands for Keurig)  You can get these at CostCo, Smart and Final, most markets and of course Amazon.

We know there are many parents who would really like to volunteer at school but their work and their hectic schedules make it impossible.   Here is a great suggestion, drop off some k-cups and know that even if you can't be on campus you are providing a nice cup of coffee for a volunteer.

Our Paper Tank is Low!!!!

On Back to School night many parents showed up with reams of paper.   Thank you.
But now here we are one month later and our coffers are low.  Ms Castro who works in the office is at our paper cupboard.  She is pointing to where our paper was earlier in the month.   The tank is getting low.

Fact:  The school goes through ten reams of paper a day.   When the parents volunteer reams of paper it helps Principal Boger's budget.

Please make a point of picking up a ream of paper and dropping it off at the office.
By the way, did you know that reams of paper are often for sale in markets like Ralphs and Vons?  Take a look in their school supply area (yes they have one!).

Also we are in need of color paper as well.  Both LACES Staff and FOL use color paper.  How about pinking up a ream of pink or yellow!

LACES

The 2013-2014 school year is two months old and we are now launching the Wish List for LACES.  Teachers, staff and others who work every day at LACES are in need of items.  Every thing that is requested will support the LACES community which in turn supports the students.    Thank you for reading this blog and checking in often for updates.
