Winter Break Wish List

There are only a few days left before we go on break.

First of all thank you who have been stepping up with the paper.   Several of you showed up or shipped cases.   The office is very grateful.   With finals week we have been going through tons of paper so your donations have really helped.   Some of you may be waiting until after the holidays to get paper.   Great, the office will welcome your white and colored paper in 2014 with great joy.

In the meantime….

YOGA BLOCKS AND STRAPS

PE Teacher Jillian Howden has a yoga class.   She had great success this first semester with her students.
We've had a very successful first semester of yoga and I've seen great improvements in flexibility and tranquility with my teens in the class. I'd love to add more poses but we are lacking in yoga blocks and straps. If you happen to have any you're not using or would like to contribute our yoga students and I would be so grateful!!  -- Ms Howden.

If you go to yoga classes you know the value of blocks and straps.    If you have any you can pass or if you can purchase some Ms. Howden would be very appreciative.    Here is the LINK on Amazon for blocks  and here is a link for straps.  Of course you can also just pick them up at Target or other stores, even Whole Foods.

COFFEE URN

The coffee urn in the parent center is dead.   Do you  have a coffee urn that you don't use?  How about a member of your family, do they have one they aren't using?   Or could you pick one up?  There are a lot of choices on Amazon and of course if you swing by CostCo, Target, etc, you can find one there.

If you are getting one, let me know so I can update this item.  Thank you    Trabot@ca.rr.com    -- Tracy

A Thanksgiving and First week of December Wish

UPDATE:  Thank you, parents.  Mr. Laderman's project has been completed by 16 sponsors.
You guys stepped up and took care of business.  Our students thank you, they will enjoy and learn so much from the photo gates.

Thank you

UPDATE: As of December 4, we have 12 supporters and there is $228 left to complete the project.
If you have not helped yet, we could still use your help.   Remember even a few dollars will help. It is all good in our hood.

As parents of a students at LACES, we all have much to be thankful.   Most of us do not worry if our child is getting the best education available.  That is a big worry off our shoulders and for that I'm sure we are all grateful.

Tapping into your grateful and thankful heart, would you consider helping our science department?
Mr. Laderman right now has 8 supporters on his Donor's Choose Project.

He is asking for photo gates, which are digital timers.  They will allow students to precisely characterize motion.  They are considered fundamental equipment in modern physics class.  Some of the AP Physics exam questions cover hypothetical experiments with photogates.

We need several more supporters to get both gates.  Can you donate $25 $50 maybe (pinch me) $100?
If you love science and want to support science look no further than this project.  You can read more about it HERE.

If you are sitting around on Thanksgiving surrounded by family ask them if they will help by kicking in a few dollars.     It would be great to get this project paid in full by this weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Okay, let's round up the usual suspects….
PAPER
Here are the paper closets as of 4pm today.   That second shelf is the white paper.   We are not in good shape.    We had a couple parents bring in some paper last week but we were in such a drought we have practically drained it dry.   Can you please bring in a carton?  Or can you bring in two reams?   What would be ideal is to fill that shelf and that closet.  If we do that we could get through November and December.

ETA:

IF you have a tight schedule and can't find the time to go to Staples or Office Depot. Please consider going Online and ordering a case and having it delivered (in some cases Free shipping).

UPDATE:  As of Thursday 11-21, Mr Laderman has had 7 donations.
He still needs $433 to get the two photogates.
Are there 4 people who can donate $100 each?
How about 8 people who can Donate $50 each?
Can you make a donation and ask someone you know to kick in?
How about a friend who has no children?  How about a relative?
How about a co-worker who likes to help?
Help build up our science at LACES.   Please go to Donor'sChoose link and read what he has written.

Look at this beautiful photo.
This is upper grade science teacher Mr. Laderman's class.    Look what he does to engage our students.

Good Deeds Aplenty

Update:  Are you you going to yogurtland? Can you get a couple $5 gift cards? How about CBTL?
We did receive some but need more.  Thank you.

"Caught Being Good Ticket"

Did you know students who pick up litter, improve class behavior, help another student and a whole host of other good stuff are often given a 'Caught Being Good Ticket"   Their ticket is put in a box and then once a week there is a drawing and the winning student gets a $1 coupon good for the student store.

One group of actions that has been showing up more and more are students who turn in lost iphones and ipods.   Ms Selig and the office staff would like to reward the electronic turn ins (which are quite valuable) with a little boost, like a $5 gift card to…Coffee Bean, Yogurtland, Subway etc.   The next time you are out at one of these business or similar would you pick up a couple $5 gift cards?
You can give it to the front office to the attention of Maggie Scott or Ms. Selig.

Got Bandaids?

The office staff needs Bandaids.  Multiple sizes.   Can you pick up a box (multiple sizes)?

UPDATE: About five boxes of bandaids from several families have been dropped off at the office.  Thank you, Parents.  We are good (for now).

Paper Status

Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard ----and it was bare.
This is the closet where we keep the parent donated paper.    As of Friday it was empty.

The school goes through ten reams of paper a day.   When you donate a ream (s) of paper you are helping Mr. Boger's budget.   If we provide paper he does not have to order from district.

If you have not donated a ream lately will you please pick up a ream or two.  If you donated back on back to school night will you go back to Staples (or the like) and pick up another couple reams.

If we fill this closet we will take care of the rest of November.

Week of November 5 UPDATE

We are almost completely out of Kleenex.
I was shocked that we went through the piles we had 10 days ago.
But it is down to just a few boxes.

We are also out of paper.   Yep, totally out.  Can you pick up a ream or two and drop off?
Remember they sell reams of paper even at Ralphs if you can't get to Office Depot or Staples.

We are still requesting copies of "The Circuit" and "Julia of the Wolves"  Are you going to Barnes and Noble?   Can you go online to Amazon and order one of each?
Circuit
Julie of the Wolves

And Susan Robinson (parent in class of 2014) is the point person for Ms Henry's chair.
If you would like to contribute a few dollars to the chair fund please email her at:
 susanrobinson1@ca.rr.com

Finally, have you turned your donation to the direct donation campaign?   Please make your donation asap.

Thank you

Cough, Sneeze, Achoo & Paper

The coffers are starting to replenish.
Kleenex is starting to come in.   Thank you.  Special thank you to the parent who brought in the gigantor box that looked like it was four feet long.  Wow.

And the hand sanitizer shelf is also starting to fill up.     If you haven't picked up a bottle and wanted to do it. We still need it. We know what is coming around the corner......winter.

Also thank you to those parents who are helping to replenish our paper.   Have you brought in a ream lately?  If not the office staff will be thrilled by your donation.   The school goes through ten reams a day.    Thank you!

Ms Henry: A tale of a Chair & Paper Shredder

Update:  Thank you, parent who brought Ms Henry a paper shredder. She is so thrilled and grateful.

We still need a chair!

Ms Henry the LACES College Counselor has two small wishes.   She really needs a chair.   Of course she has a chair, but it is the most uncomfortable chair in the world.   Ms Henry said it does not have to be new or fancy chair, she just would be grateful for a chair that is comfortable.

As you know we don’t have a lot of extra chairs at LACES (we still need chairs for the parent center) so she doesn’t have much opportunity to swap out.

Ms Henry is in her chair a lot talking to colleges and universities on behalf of our students.

Do you have a gently used comfortable office chair you are no longer using?   Or perhaps there are a couple of you who want to go in on a chair?   Email me and I will help coordinate.  Trabot@ca.rr.com

Ms Henry’s other need is a commercial grade paper shredder.  Every time Ms Henry  prints out a student's grades and and goes over it with the student she then must shred it to protect their privacy.   There is a general shredder that serves the whole school but she shreds so much she would benefit by one that is in the College Center.

She needs one that is a little bit more industrial than home shredders but it does not have to be uber fancy .  Something like the Ativa Pro.    There is one on ebay for about $80.    Or maybe Craigslist?

Book Update!

We believe we are good on Bluest Eye.  Thank you, parents!

We have had a lot of headway on the other two titles, seriously great headway--- but we still need one more push.

We need 5 more copies of Julie of the Wolves.  You can find it on AMAZON.

And we need 5 more copies of The Circuit which you can also find on AMAZON.

The English department is forever in your debt and very grateful for all of you who have helped. If there were some of you who still wanted to contributed but haven't had a chance---now is the time.  Your contribution goes a long way.  You can drop it off yourself or if you ship send it to:

Mr Mukai's Science Room

Update:
Success!!!  This wish has been completed.
Thanks to all who helped!

Parents,
Do you love science?  Do you want your child to love science?
Or  Is your child in Mr. Mukai's class?    Do you think your child may be in Mr. Mukai's class in the future?

Mr. Mukai has a science wish list on Donor's Choose.
If you can make a monetary donation of any amount it will help.

And if you can make a donation between now and October 21 (Put the word INSPIRE in promo code) your donation will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $100).  So you donate $20 and you put Inspire in promo code, he'll get $40 towards his goal.

Please go HERE for all the information on what he is trying to do in the class.
It is inspiring.

Thank you for helping.

Culinary Teacher Request

UPDATE:
Ms Phillips received two new yogurt makers.
And A gently used one is on its way to her.
She is excited to set up a lesson on cultures and she has been talking with the science teachers to see how it can line up with their curriculum.
She could still use some plastic storage containers.  If you can pick up some she would be grateful.

Two yogurt makers are on their way to Ms Phillips.

But she could still use a couple more.   Can you check your cupboard?  Can you pick one up?  They are less than $30 on Amazon.

If you don't have one can you ask a friend of your's?  You know the friend who probably bought it about ten years ago, used it twice an forgot about it.

Also she did get some containers (thank you, parent) but Ms Phillips still needs plastic containers with lids.

The Math Department needs white chalk.
Their preferred brand is Prang White Chalk which you can find at this link at Staples.

They have plenty of mulitcolor chalk but White is needed.
If you pick some up at your next trip to Staples drop it off at the office attention Mr. Vriesman.
If you want to buy online have it delivered to school attention: Mr. Vriesman.

Your help is appreciated by our math teachers and our students.

BOOKS WE STILL NEED!!!!

Thanks to our generous parents several of the the book requests were filled last month.

However, we are still short.

We need 15 copies of THE BLUEST EYE by Toni Morrison.   Do you have a copy of it at home?  How about your sister/friend/neighbor who reads everything?  Do they have a copy they would like to donate?    And of course, it can be purchased onAMAZON.

We need 15 copies of JULIE OF THE WOLVES by Jean Craighead George.
Do you have any copies at home?  Again it can be found on AMAZON

And we need 15 copies of THE CIRCUIT by Francisco Jaminez.  AMAZON

If you are passionate about reading, it probably started when you were the same age as the LACES students.   If you want to help inspire and ignite the reading bug in your child and his or her friend, please pick up one or two of these books.    The instructors who teach will do their part which won't be hard because they too are passionate about books.

Also, look around, do you have an old Barnes and Noble card?  Take it out of the dusty drawer and get one of these books.   Or what about Grandma?  Does she want to help your child's school?  Is she a passionate reader?  Ask her to go to Amazon and send a  book to LACES.

If you drop off, take it to the front office--attention Nikki Derdzinske.

If you ship send it:

Office Staff Needs Help

Did you know that student ID's and bus passes are laminated?

The office staff uses business card laminating pouches to protect the student's id's and bus passes.   can you pick up a packet at OFFICE DEPOT or go online and order them.  Please go to Office Depot, the ones at Staples are too small.  They run about $20 for a package.    The size should be 3 3/4 by 2 9/16 inches.

Office Staff Thanks you.

The Parent Center Needs Help

This week the old microwave in the parent center went on to life support.   And the plug will be pulled soon.   Michelle providing her parents barely used microwave in two weeks.  Thanks!

Do you have a gently used microwave that you could donate to the parent center?
Or maybe you want to pick up one (under $70)  at Target?
Parent volunteers would be grateful as this is where they heat up their lunch.

The Parent Center is very low on Avery Labels5160/8160 (or similar) .   Do you have a box lying around your house from the old days when you mailed Christmas cards before now when you send cyber ones?  Do you have a box from some old job?   Or could you pick up a box at Staples.

Finally can you send in some cups (non styro) for hot drinks?  Do you have a stack lying around from some home party?   It would be so appreciated by everyone if you could send it to the Parent Center.

The Parent Center Volunteers thank you.

Hand Sanitizer is Running Low!

Our little cupboard with antibacterial hand sanitizers is low, low, low.  Cold and Flu season is minutes away and this supply is not enough.   When you are out and about doing errands can you pick up a few bottles of Purell or similiar and drop off at the office?
Your child's teacher(s) need it.

If we all pick up some bottles we can fill the coffers back up very soon.

Achoo! Cough! Hack! Achoo! Sniff!

Have you noticed the Santa Ana's are blowing?   Yep the dry winds are here and the allergies are up.    Our kids are coughing and sneezy and looking for tissues.

This is what is left of our tissues.   The cupboard is getting low.   Before the staff orders more from the district which impacts our budget.   Would you consider picking up some boxes of kleenex (or the like) and dropping them off at the office?     The noses are running!!

K-CUPS

Last month two parents generously donated single cup coffee makers to the parent center.  Now when a parent works at school and wants a cup of coffee they can make one cup instead of a whole carafe.  Hurray.    But we could really use some K-Cups  (the K stands for Keurig)  You can get these at CostCo, Smart and Final, most markets and of course Amazon.

We know there are many parents who would really like to volunteer at school but their work and their hectic schedules make it impossible.   Here is a great suggestion, drop off some k-cups and know that even if you can't be on campus you are providing a nice cup of coffee for a volunteer.

Our Paper Tank is Low!!!!

On Back to School night many parents showed up with reams of paper.   Thank you.
But now here we are one month later and our coffers are low.  Ms Castro who works in the office is at our paper cupboard.  She is pointing to where our paper was earlier in the month.   The tank is getting low.

Fact:  The school goes through ten reams of paper a day.   When the parents volunteer reams of paper it helps Principal Boger's budget.

Please make a point of picking up a ream of paper and dropping it off at the office.
By the way, did you know that reams of paper are often for sale in markets like Ralphs and Vons?  Take a look in their school supply area (yes they have one!).

Also we are in need of color paper as well.  Both LACES Staff and FOL use color paper.  How about pinking up a ream of pink or yellow!

LACES

The 2013-2014 school year is two months old and we are now launching the Wish List for LACES.  Teachers, staff and others who work every day at LACES are in need of items.  Every thing that is requested will support the LACES community which in turn supports the students.    Thank you for reading this blog and checking in often for updates.
