I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT MS DUKE'S DONORS CHOOSE PROJECT IS COMPLETED.   PHEW!   I WAS A BIT NERVOUSE BUT ONCE AGAIN PARENTS STEPPED UP AND IN THE CASE OF BOTH MS DUKE AND MR. SOLOMON WE HAD SOME SPECIAL ANGELS TAKE THE BALL ACROSS THE FINAL LINE.

If you don't know Ms Duke and your child never had her--Do you appreciate science?

Ms Duke is working hards to make science "live and breathe" for her  8th Grade Science & 10th Grade Chemistry students and she needs our help.

She needs basic items to help her classes.  Seriously basic--like pens and bright paper and colored pencils.  She has posted her needs on DONOR's Choose.

One of the greatest skills our students are lacking are study skills. A science interactive notebook is a great tool to use. Interactive notebooks help with students' organization, but they are also a creative way to engage students to process information and demonstrate critical thinking. At the end of the year, the students will have a working portfolio that can be assessed to show what they have learned throughout the school year.

In our list we have added different colored pens, papers, colored pencils so that students can use them to show their creative side. By having these resources students can demonstrate what they know and organize their information in a creative way. We have also asked for pencils, glue sticks, and scissors because a lot of class time is lost when we have to share our materials. Our students have procedures to make the class run smoothly while working on their notebooks. Unfortunately, a lot of class time is lost and limits our learning time.

In order to get her needs fulfilled we need people to donate whatever they can.  If you can donate $10 great.  If you can donate $30, great.   If you can donate $100,  great.   If all of us step up we can help Ms Duke realize this great cause--engaging LACES students in Science.

Mr. Solomon, LACES resource specialist, needs our assistance on his Donor's Choose Project.
He is in need of earmuffs for testing.  The point of his class is to offer testing in smaller settings with less distractions.   The earmuffs will help because not everyone is taking the same test or doing the same work.

On any given school day, various students may come to my classroom (the Resource Room) to either work or test in a small group setting, or make up a test due to absence. While this is part of the purpose of my classroom, another of its simultaneous purposes is for students of various grade levels enrolled in my class to gain assistance in the academic areas in which they struggle. This often causes distractions, particularly as many of the students who utilize the Resource Room do so largely because they are so easily distracted.

Mr. Solomon serves students in all grades.   Even if you don't have a child who benefits directly by Mr. Solomon,  his work is benefiting the whole school.  And for that we are grateful.

We are down to $197 left so that he can get a whole set of noise reducing earmuffs.

Let's try to get this project done in the next week so he can have these muffs for testing way before CSTs.

The Envelope, Please!

The front office needs envelopes.  Standard letter size.  They have a bunch of stuff they have to send out to parents and as you know we have a lot of students so ergo lot of parents.  

If you are out and about can you pick up a box or two.

Hand Sanitizers

We are down to one bottle of hand sanitizer.   Whoops.   I should have reminded you earlier.
When you go to the market or drug store this week will you please pick up some bottles.  Not super big ones, just regulare size will work.    Send them to the front office with your child.

Back to Tissues

Yes, we still need tissues.  Elizabeth in the office said it is still pretty low.  A few of you did send in some boxes and they were used almost immediately.     If you have not brought in boxes of tissues, now would be the time.   Our cuckoo weather may not look like winter but the hot days can actually aggravating sniffles.    Send BOXES in.   Please.

As you can imagine buzzer practice is vital to maximize chances for success at The National Science Bowl.    LACES has one buzzer system which is shared by the High School and the Middle School Science Bowl teams.  This means during each practice a group has to sit out.

The department is energized, the students are galvanized and it is clear that this year  LACES is capable of winning either the high school division or middle school division  – or BOTH!    They are just that good. But they need help. 

The next level of competition is Feb 22 and the one after that is in April.

Our goal is to get the teams the additional buzzer system ASAP so that the teams won’t waste one second of practice. 

The system is $575.  

If you have a child who loves science will you please contribute?

If you love living on Earth and see all the problems we have and know that we are going to need scientists to help save water, clean air, make life more efficient---please contribute to those future scientists now who are working with one little buzzer system.    Fixing the world starts here!
